It was only a few weeks ago that I captured Nick and Elle putting the nursery together during their documentary maternity session in their Winter Park home, and now I was back for their son’s newborn session. Documentary newborn photography focuses on telling the story of what life is like with a new person added to the family. It is about the relationships within the family, old and new, and how they have grown with this wonderful addition. We don’t stress about contorting the littlest family member into different shapes and props. We also don’t have the bother of multiple wardrobe changes and nap interruptions. It’s all the things the first few weeks of parenthood entail: feeding, pooping, bathing, sleeping, and of course lots and lots of baby snuggles.

Preparations

We discussed prior to baby’s arrival what type of coverage they would want of his first week. Some parents hire me to capture arrival (birth), the first 48 hours where they meet other family and heading home, or sometimes (like Nick and Elle) they wait to get a little settled to have me over. There’s no right or wrong way to document this time in your life; however, it is such a huge milestone that you want to make sure you have a photography plan in mind before baby comes. If you’re going to wait until baby is home, make sure you still make arrangements as early as possible for a session date. Babies change and grow so much in the first month, so the sooner you’re able to schedule the more “newness” of life you’ll be able to capture.

Session Details

Elle is a pediatric nurse and Nick is a firefighter/paramedic. These two are an amazing parental pair that had very few first-time parent jitters. Elle took the lead on baby’s first bath while Nick showed off his swaddling prowess. The fur babies stood guard of their little brother through most of our session, with Ella staying right by his side (since that’s where all the softest fabrics were).

Don’t worry if you haven’t thought too far ahead for maternity and newborn photography. Though we prefer booking 1-3 months out, we can offer bookings during the week with very little notice. Please fill out our contact form to get more information and check on our availability.
